Since 1985, John Fulton, better known as the Surfing Santa, has turned a unique holiday tradition into a poignant reminder of the homelessness crisis. Every December 23rd, he surfs the Niagara River’s icy waters between Fort Erie, Ontario, and Buffalo, New York. More than a display of cold-weather bravery, Fulton’s annual surf is a meaningful gesture aimed at shedding light on the struggles faced by homeless individuals. This event not only brings joy and entertainment to onlookers but also serves as a catalyst for community action and support for those in need. By focusing on the issue of homelessness, Surfing Santa encourages donations, raises awareness, and fosters a sense of solidarity and empathy, emphasizing the importance of looking out for one another, especially during the holiday season.
